Bio - Jo McLean
I am an English-born artist with a BA (Hons) in Ceramics from South Glamorgan Institute of HE Faculty of Art and Design (1988).
I moved to New Zealand in 1994.
In November 1999, I left the workforce to become a full time mother to the first of my two children. It is only in the last year that I have created the time and space to return to ceramics.
I find myself attracted to birds as subject matter because, for me, they represent a lightness of spirit and the ability to literally transcend the worries and distractions of the everyday. Birds have the ability to inhabit two worlds, two elements, simultaneously and I feel that there is something compelling about their physical and spiritual essence that remains elusive.

I think the main reason I have wound up using clay over any other medium is because it gives me the opportunity to use form, texture and colour to express my ideas. It is very satisfying to transform creative thoughts into solid matter that can literally be picked up and held. I also have a love/hate relationship with the glazing process which is always unpredictable, sometimes suprising and often inspiring.
If you see something you like on the site, I can make pieces to order. All pieces are hand crafted individually, and therefore unique. No two will be exactly the same. I am also happy to do commisioned pieces
